Taekwondo
Training Requirements
The American Taekwondo Association Training Requirements are among the most teaching friendly and learning friendly of all of the modern martial arts programs. During the 1980's, the ATA leadership refined and standardized its instruction so that every student is guaranteed to learn and progress at his or her own level. They named this form of instruction Songham Taekwondo since it updates and modernizes the requirements from the original taekwondo techniques developed over 1000 years ago.
Beginners start at the entry level of White Belt and progress through ten color belt levels until they become eligible to test for First Degree Black Belt. The requirements of each color belt level builds on previous knowledge, and students gradually develop familiarity and competence of the basics of Songham Taewondo martial arts techniques. If a student demonstrates a sincere desire to learn and commits to weekly training, it takes between 2-3 years to become eligible to test for Black Belt.
Three Areas of Instruction
Forms
Songham Taekwondo requires that students learn and demonstrate a Form for each belt level. The Form is a series of moves that teaches the student certain blocks, strikes and kicks. Video demonstrations of these forms can be viewed on the video tab from the menu.
Sparring Combinations
With each Form there are three sparring combinations to master. These combine kicks and blocks that students are required to master at each belt level.
One-Step Fighting Techniques
With the first five belt levels, White through Green, students are required to learn moves which teach them how to fight, judge distance and master timing of the moves. Students learn these moves by working with a partner.
